To work in Canada, most foreign nationals require a work permit. There are two primary types: Open work permits – which permit employment with any employer, and Employer-specific work permits – which restrict employment to a specific company. Typically, a Canadian job offer supported by a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is necessary, although there are exceptions.
Popular work permit programs include the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, International Mobility Program, Post-Graduation Program, and Bridging Open Work Permit.
Eligibility requirements include a valid job offer (typically required), a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or exemption, relevant job qualifications, proof of financial support, proficiency in English, good health, and a clean criminal record.
An Australian work permit, typically obtained through a work visa, enables foreign nationals to legally engage in employment within Australia. The process entails selecting appropriate visa options such as:
Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482): For skilled workers to fill labor gaps.
Working Holiday visa (subclass 417 or 462): For young travelers who want to work and holiday in Australia.
Eligibility requirements include a valid job offer (usually from an Australian employer), relevant qualifications and experience, sufficient points for skilled visas (if required), proof of financial support, English proficiency, good health, and no criminal record.
To be employed in the United Kingdom, most overseas applicants must obtain a Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed sponsor. The relevant immigration programs operate on a points-based system, requiring candidates to achieve a sufficient score for eligibility. There are two main categories:
Skilled Worker visa – This visa enables individuals to reside and work in the UK under the licensed sponsor in an occupation that meets specific criteria. UK work visa requirements include a COS – Certificate of Sponsorship, a job on the eligible occupations list, and a minimum salary.
Health and Care Worker visa – Allows medical professionals to come to or stay in the UK to do an eligible job with the NHS, an NHS supplier or in adult social care. Eligibility requires being a qualified medical professional working for an approved UK employer with a Home Office sponsorship certificate and a minimum salary.
To work in Europe, non-European citizens typically require a work permit and a corresponding visa. The specific requirements and procedures differ based on the country and the nature of the work. Generally, a job offer from an employer in the desired European country is a prerequisite, and the employer may need to demonstrate that the position cannot be filled by a local candidate.
Typically, an EU work visa is granted for a period of one year (12 months), with the option of extension in several European countries upon its expiration. However, the specific duration of the work visa varies depending on the issuing country.
For instance, Denmark permits work for an indefinite job contract for up to four years, while Austria may grant such permits for up to two years.
